Kyō-sensu (Kyoto folding fan)
Hand-painting experience with your favorite design on a plain fan surface
While many traditional industries were imported from the continent, fans were born in Japan around the 9th century and developed among the imperial nobility. Later, they were used in theatrical performances such as Sarugaku and Noh, and became widely popular among the general public. They were also incorporated into the tea ceremony, and Kyoto, where the tea ceremony flourished, established itself as the hometown of fan production. In the Kyoto Fan Experience, you will hand-paint on Japanese paper designed for fans.
